Freelancing as a Developer: Lessons from 2 Years

After two years of freelancing full-time, here's what I wish I knew from the start.

Finding Clients

The best clients come from referrals. But to get your first clients:

  • Contribute to open source
  • Write about your expertise
  • Build in public
  • Join communities (Discord, Twitter/X)
  • Pricing

Stop charging hourly. Value-based pricing changed everything for me. If your work generates $100K for a client, charging $5K is reasonable — even if it only took 2 weeks.

    Communication

Over-communicate. Send weekly updates. Share progress screenshots. Clients hire freelancers they trust, and trust comes from transparency.

    Work-Life Balance

Set boundaries early. Define working hours. Take breaks. Burnout is real, and a burned-out developer produces terrible work.

    Conclusion

Freelancing is rewarding but challenging. Focus on relationships, not just code, and you'll build a sustainable career.
